The case for change
Australia’s largest logistics company (rail and ports) made a strategic decision to concentrate capital and operational investment in its core logistics functions and shift its back office, processes and core technology (applications and infrastructure) to an outsourced managed service model on a Private Cloud framework.
The strategic shift sparked a trend in the proliferation of business initiatives enabling an innovation and technology transformation from a traditional legacy bespoke landscape to a fully centralised Cloud-based leading-edge technology stack.
Our scope:
- To enable a managed service operating model to support core IT and back office functions (Infrastructure and applications)
- To modernise and transform 15 core logistics applications and 100 functions from a traditional IT data center-hosted model to a cloud-based solution
- To deliver a framework enabling future business innovation and technology initiatives
- To develop and implement a data and security strategy
- To achieve 30% saving in the opex budget
What we were up against
The infrastructure and applications landscape was made up of multiple undocumented legacy applications and business functions, underpinned by outmoded 15 year-old infrastructure.
The shift to the new managed service cloud model inspired an unprecedented digital transformation encompassing people, process and technology. The ageing business was initially resistant to the introduction of a new approach to technology and the new ways of working however, the application of an intensive change management program ensured the smooth transition of people process and technology into a new operating rhythm.
Outcome achieved
This program of work was the largest single outsourcing activity made by any Australian company in 2014. With a budget in excess of AUD $60M the program team successfully stood up the virtual infrastructure and supporting services enabling the migration of all applications components with minimal to no operational impacts. The program of work was completed on time and within budget.
